I just got back from a very unexpected trip. It was unexpected for a couple of reasons. First, I hadn't planned on going. However, life happened, and I wanted to be of assistance to a friend. Second, Portland was never on my radar as a travel destination. All I knew of Portland before this trip: legal marijuana, hipsters, and waterfalls. Boy, was in for a treat...
As you can see from the sign above, Portland digs weird. Like, really weird. Here are some things that I never even knew to be exisistence as of one week ago:
Uni-piper= a unicycling bagpiper (Apparently he is quite famous in Portland. Sometimes he wears a Darth Vader costume.)
Geoduck= a large, strange looking mollusk found in the Pacific Northwest. (It's delicious, and pronounced as "gooey-duck".)
Hippie-Grass= Hippies take over Bluegrass music
Tiny Insurance= I met an insurance agent who only works with tiny homes.
I will say that the most "Portland" thing that happened to me was talking to a complete stranger as he blew bubbles around me and asked if I would be interested in going to see some live "Hippie Grass" music. The bubbles has me greatly distracted, but I think I provided a polite excuse as to why I needed to pass.
Okay, so Portland IS weird. Yet, I will say that I was surprised by so many things. First, the food is epic. Be sure to check out all of the amazing sushi options, like Bamboo Sushi. Or, for a more guilty pleasure, grab a donut at Voodoo Doughnut.

For book lovers, no trip to Portland is complete without a visit to Powells City of Books. This bookstore is a landmark, and filled to the brim with every kind of genre you can imagine. They offer new and used titles, and the prices are insanely reasonable. I have a sore back from hauling all of of my new books in my carry-on, but I have zero regrets. I would do it again in a hearbeat!

Sadly, I did not get an opportunity to visit outside of the city. I hear that the forests and waterfalls are amazing, so I will have to see those next time. I was able to view Mt. Hood from my hotel room, so I guess I did get a tiny taste of the scenery.

Now that I know the vibe of Portland's laid-back atmosphere, here are some of the items I WISH that I would have packed.

Knot Sweatshirt - $29

Have you been to Portland? What was the strangest thing you witnessed?
